Pyrography—the art of burning designs into wood and other materials—is my creative escape. Over time, I’ve learned new techniques, found inspiration, and even picked up tips on turning my passion into something more. Here are just a few of the books, artists, and shows that have fuelled my love for woodburning!
Artists & Books That Inspire Me
Hippie North- Canadian Pyrography Artist (Instagram, YouTube & Woodburning Workshop Book)
o Nature-inspired designs, shading techniques & stencil use
o Her book helped me refine my skills and build confidence
Lora S. Irish – Great Book of Woodburning
o One of the most comprehensive guides to woodburning

o Focuses on design, shading & working with different woods
Sue Walters – Pyrography Workbook
o Teaches textures & patterns (think fur, feathers, gradients!)
o Opened my eyes to the possibilities of burning on leather, bark etc.
Cherry Ferris- The Innovative Artist: The Art of Pyrography
o Introduced me to adding colour to my pyrography
o Mixed-media ideas like watercolour and acrylics on wood
Lisa Shackleton – Solid-Point Pyrography
o Step-by-step projects, perfect for learning new techniques
o Great for solid-point burners (not just wire-tip pyrography)
Luke Adam Hawker
o I had the incredible opportunity to meet Luke, a talented local artist known for his breath-taking line drawings. His intricate pen work and detailed cityscapes have been a huge source of inspiration for my pyrography, especially when creating fine details and depth.
o Seeing his work up close made me appreciate the power of simple yet precise lines
o One of the things I love most about his work is his obsession with trees, which I can completely relate to!
The Tattoo Dictionary
o Another unexpected but exciting influence on my pyrography is tattoo art! The Tattoo Dictionary has been a great resource, teaching me about the history, meaning, and symbolism behind different tattoo motifs.
o I love how traditional tattoo designs—like mandalas, floral patterns, animals, and script—translate beautifully into woodburning.
o The bold lines and high-contrast shading used in tattoo art have inspired me to experiment with different styles in my own pyrography pieces.
My Love for Calligraphy & Typography
o A few years ago, I took a beginner’s calligraphy course—and fell in love with fonts & script!
o Books like Modern Calligraphy (Lucy Edmonds) helped me refine lettering, which I now incorporate into my pyrography, through quotes, meaningful words, motivational phrases and personalised messages, to name a few
Instagram: A Hub for Pyrography Inspiration
o Instagram is one of my go-to platforms for discovering new pyrography techniques and connecting with other artists worldwide.
o Following pyrography artists and other talented creators keeps me inspired with fresh ideas.
o Seeing different styles, tools, and projects from around the world has helped me push my creativity further!
o I love engaging with the pyrography community—sharing my work, getting feedback, and learning from others in real time
Craft Shows That Inspire Me
Make It at Market
o Amazing tips on turning a hobby into a small business
o Helped me think about pricing, presentation & selling handmade work
The Repair Shop
o Watching skilled artisans restore items is SO inspiring
o It’s a reminder of the beauty of traditional craftsmanship
Final Thoughts…
These books, artists, and shows have shaped my pyrography journey—teaching me techniques, boosting my creativity, and even helping me think more professionally about my craft.
