Whilst a rewarding and creative hobby, pyrography also involves high heat and smoke, which can be hazardous if proper precautions aren’t taken. Follow these essential safety tips to protect yourself and enjoy your craft safely.

1. Ensure Proper Ventilation

Woodburning produces smoke and fumes. Inhaling these fumes can cause respiratory irritation or more severe health issues. To maintain good air quality:

  • Work in a well-ventilated area, ideally with open windows and fans.

  • Use a smoke extractor or air purifier if possible.

  • Avoid burning treated, painted, or stained wood, as these materials release toxic chemicals when burned.

  • Wear a dust mask if working on larger projects that generate more smoke.

2. Maintain a Clean and Organised Workspace

A cluttered workspace can increase the risk of accidental burns or fire. Keep your area neat by:

  • Removing flammable materials such as paper, fabric, or wood shavings from your work surface.

  • Placing the woodburning tool on a heat-resistant stand when not in use.

  • Using a fire-resistant mat if working on a wooden table.

3. Handle Hot Nibs with Care

The nib, or tip, of a woodburning tool can reach extremely high temperatures, which can cause severe burns. To handle your tool safely:

  • Never touch the nib or metal parts when the tool is on or has recently been turned off.

  • Allow the tool to cool completely before changing tips or storing it.

  • Use heat-resistant gloves if you need to handle parts that may still be warm.

4. Turn Off the Machine When Not in Use

Leaving your woodburning tool unattended while it’s on can be dangerous. Always:

  • Turn off and unplug the tool if you step away, even for a short time.

  • Double-check that the tool is off and cool before leaving your workspace.

  • Store the tool safely, away from combustible materials, once you finish your project.

  • Avoid distractions while using your woodburning tool to stay focused on your work.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the art of woodburning while minimising potential risks. Stay safe, and happy burning!
